J. Sankar receives Order of the Long Leaf Pine from the Governor

Dr. Jag Sankar, University Distinguished Professor and Director of the NSF ERC-RMB, was recently recognized by the Governor of North Carolina with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. The award is among the most prestigious civilian awards presented by the Governor to individuals who have a proven record of extraordinary service to the state. Notable recipients of this award in the past include Maya Angelou, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, William Friday, Charles Kuralt and Andy Griffith.

The award was presented on June 9, 2015, at the ERC’s 7th Annual Site Visit by program officers from NSF and a panel of subject matter experts from across the country. Presenting the award was Dr. John Hardin, Executive Director for the North Carolina Board of Science, Technology & Innovation. Felicitating Dr. Sankar’s dedicated and outstanding service to the University and the people of North Carolina, Chancellor Harold Martin reminisced about how, starting from a small lab, Dr. Sankar has built up an outstanding research infrastructure and team to generate world-class research, innovation, translation and education in advanced materials, targeting a wide range of applications.
