Current Research Areas/Interests

My current research interests are focused on materials development for biomedical implants, aerospace and naval applications, energy applications, carbon nanotubes and sensors. They include:

  • Plasticity, dynamic recrystallization, texture and mechanical properties of HCP metals and their alloys
  • Advanced coatings for medical implants and devices
  • Structure, mechanical and chemical properties of thin films, nanocomposites and nanolaminates
  • Materials for solid-oxide fuel cells and membranes for catalytic fuel conversion
  • Alignment and texture analysis using XRD, EBSD and Raman spectroscopy
  • Carbon nanotube array growth on catalytic surfaces
  • Functionally gradient and protective coatings
  • Properties and performance evaluation of high temperature ceramics and their composites
  • Thermal- and stress-induced phase transformations in ceramics
  • Materials processing techniques: magnetron sputtering, plasma enhanced physical vapor deposition, ceramic processing, nanoimprint patterning of catalysts, combinatorial methods
  • Application of TEM, SEM, AFM, nanoindentation, Raman spectroscopy and XRD in materials research

Materials development methods: DC and radio-frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering, pulsed laser deposition (PLD), thermal sintering techniques. Characterization methods: Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (OM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), micro-Raman spectroscopy and profilometry. Testing techniques: tensile and fatigue testing at room and high temperatures, nanoindentation, microindentation, microtribology

1981-1996: 15 years of research and teaching experience in the area of synthesis, analysis and study of organic dyes, nitrogen and oxygen containing heterocycles, liquid crystals components and fluorine-containing unsaturated ketones. Research studies included low temperature reactions of lithium organic compounds, nucleophilic reactions of unsaturated ketones, conformational analysis, photochemical and thermal reactions of chiral dopants for liquid crystal systems, electronic absorption and emission spectra, photochemistry and photostability of laser dyes, excited state proton transfer, acid-base and tautomeric equilibria of heterocyclic organic compounds. Methods used: NMR, UV-VIS, IR, Raman, HPLC, fluorimetry, nanosecond time-resolved fluorometry and quantum chemical calculations.
